The main challenge was to translate universal emotions into visual environments and gameplay dynamics that were both engaging and meaningful. The team worked to create a delicate balance between playfulness and reflection, allowing players to immerse themselves in an experience that not only entertains but also fosters deep introspection and personal awareness.

Mission

Develop an innovative VR game, GAST, that combines immersive storytelling, handcrafted artistry, and therapeutic techniques inspired by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), offering players an exciting experience and personal introspection.

Context

GAST was created to fill a gap in the landscape of narrative VR games, offering an experience that blends entertainment and personal growth, with a focus on themes of mental well-being and emotional resilience.

Planning

The ideation process was rooted in a multidisciplinary approach that led to innovative and original solutions. In collaboration with artist Tommaso Ragnisco, concept art and physical dioramas were created and transformed into game assets using photogrammetry, giving the project a distinctive aesthetic and a unique handcrafted touch.

Simultaneously, the game integrated principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed in collaboration with expert psychologists, providing players with practical tools for emotional regulation within an interactive context.

The narrative revolves around the journey of the protagonist, Leo, who explores emotional worlds such as Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Joy, each represented by symbolic Guardians embodying key emotional themes. This approach creates a profound and immersive experience, both narratively and psychologically.

Execution

The project was the result of a synergistic collaboration between various departments, each contributing specific expertise to create an innovative product. The artistic production brought unique environments and characters to life, leveraging advanced techniques such as photogrammetry and handcrafted design to craft a visually captivating world.

On the technical side, the use of the Unity engine enabled the development of immersive and intuitive gameplay, deeply engaging players. The sensory experience was further enhanced by immersive audio, designed by Moka Music, which added depth and atmosphere to the entire project.

The final result is a narrative and interactive VR game, available on platforms like Meta Quest 3 and PS VR, offering a comprehensive experience that combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and symbolic combat. This makes it a unique proposition in the gaming landscape.

Results

The project achieved significant results, including the creation of a unique aesthetic through the combination of artistic dioramas and photogrammetry, giving the visual experience a distinctive character. Additionally, it struck deep emotional chords, allowing players to explore universal themes such as overcoming fears and embracing self-acceptance, while fostering greater empathy and emotional awareness.

GAST stands out for its innovative approach, representing one of the first VR experiences to seamlessly integrate storytelling, art, and psychological well-being, paving new paths in the technological and creative landscape.
